Jay Leno Gets a Firsthand Look at Lexus LFA Production

McGrath Lexus of Westmont, a trusted auto dealer and repair center near Woodridge, IL, is proud to represent the Lexus line of vehicles. Of course, we’re far from the only ones who are interested.

Almost as well known for his love of cars as he is for The Tonight Show, television personality Jay Leno got a rare chance to tour a Lexus manufacturing facility in Japan and witness the production of the LFA supercars. The LFA is a modern legend, having just beat an Eclipse Jet in a head-to-head race; it’s also the holder of the Nuremberg Ring’s record for a production automobile.

Leno Heads to Japan

On his tour, Leno got to see what it takes to make an LFA from start to finish. Starting with raw materials to a finished car, the process takes only 3 days; but after that, each vehicle must pass a 10-day inspection process with 7,000 individual checks for quality.

The LFA starts its life as a carbon-fiber chassis woven together from individual threads. Leno jokes that since Toyota started off as a textile manufacturer in the 1800s, weaving carbon fiber is not far from their original business plan. When it’s done, the carbon fiber chassis is stronger than steel, yet weighs less than 20 kg.

A team of technicians then works diligently to outfit the chassis with the different parts necessary to build it up to a high-powered racing machine. Throughout the whole process, technicians are required to wear clothes to prevent any skin contact with the vehicle, showing the care that goes into making these machines. When each LFA is completed, it gets a delicate full-body detailing job by hands that make it sparkle.

After his three-day tour, Leno got a chance to drive a one-of-a-kind LFA 500 Spider. As he zoomed about the Lexus sports track, he remarked on not only the amazing sounds the engine was making, but the LFA’s incredibly smooth performance and admirable handling of curves. Leno also admits that he’s an LFA convert, not having realized the vehicle’s full potential before.

For 2013, Lexus has declared war on weather, with a goal is to make driving a Lexus the most luxurious experience possible. Not only does water impair the driving experience, but it reduces visibility and traction, which makes driving less safe, and a major concern for Lexus.

Some of the technological innovations have focused on the performance aspect of driving. Another is a headlamp washer, which comes standard on most vehicles with LED lights, which are efficient enough that they don’t generate enough heat to melt ice, making them essential in the winter.

Certainly, this is more than the non-hybrid edition, but the additional cost of entry for the 2013 ES 300h will be able to achieve 40 mpg city/39 mpg highway courtesy of its 200-hp 2.5L four-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, the 2013 ES 350 features a 3.5L V6 that’s able to produce 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, and is able to achieve 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway.

Both models feature a manual drive selector, which allows drivers to choose between normal, Sport, and Eco mode, allowing you to choose whether to emphasize the vehicle performance or fuel-efficiency features on the fly. The 300h also give you the option of EV mode, which allows ou to travel using only electric power for a limited distance.

For instance, an eight-speaker sound system is standard, though there’s the option of a 15-speaker system that features DVD audio and video capabilities.
